Wax seal necklace depicting Medusa, in Greek mythology a Gorgon. Antique wax seal charm jewelry in silver with Medusa the Gorgon as a Guardian Protectress, a Gorgoneion amulet.
Medusa
(Protectress)
"Never to look into her eyes but only by the reflection of her".
The image of the head of Medusa is used as protective power for averting evil or bad luck. The head is said to have the ability to turn onlookers to stone, and used as a apotropiac magic amulet it is called a Gorgoneion.
Medusa comes from the ancient greek word “μεδώ” and means the Protectress.
In Greek mythology Medusa (guardian, protectress) is one of the three sisters Gorgon, a winged female with living venomous snakes for hair.
Medusa was beheaded by the hero Perseus, who thereafter used her head (which retained its ability to turn onlookers to stone, as a weapon) until he gave it to the goddess Athena to place on her shield. In Ancient Greece, the Gorgoneion was a special powerful amulet showing the Gorgon head to avert evil influences or bad luck. It was used most famously by the Olympian deities Athena and Zeus: both are said to have worn the gorgoneion as a protective pendant.
This particular wax seal necklace was made using an impression of an antique wax seal that dates back to the late 18th Century, the Georgian era, and originates from England.
